welcome back. since your last email I've left federal government (because of reasons obvious to everyone paying attention) and then somehow rejoined federal government (because of reasons less obvious to everyone paying attention) and the things you mention re: holding the job less tightly are things I didn't have to think about here until this year. I'm quite pleased usually with the things I work on because I think they genuinely help people, until political appointees get their hands on them and make them meaningfully worse. to hold it lightly then is good advice that I wouldn't have said was good under different political appointees necessarily. but it is good advice now.
